Employees hired by companies on the basis of payment for work are called Gig Workers. These are mobile app based workers. These employees do not get the benefit of salary-allowances etc. like the permanent employees of the company. There is no fixed working time for gig workers. After the increase in online business in India between the company and the gig worker mainly through mobile apps, the number of gig workers has increased significantly. According to an estimate, there are currently 10 to 12 crore gig workers in the country. Most gig workers in India are associated with works like online food platforms, e-commerce companies and delivery of goods. A large number of gig workers are also associated with professions like driving. The role of gig workers is very important for companies selling goods online.
Congress-ruled Rajasthan government launched Gig Workers Welfare Board
Mr. Rahul Gandhi met gig workers during 'Bharat Jodon Yatra'. The workers had apprised Shri Rahul Gandhi of their demands and problems. Thereafter in February 2023, the Congress-ruled Rajasthan government announced the 'Gig Workers Welfare Act' for social and economic security and set up a welfare fund of Rs 200 crore for temporary workers called 'gig workers' working for companies like Ola, Uber, Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon etc.
KCC demands that like the Rajasthan government, the Central Government should immediately set up a 'National Gig Workers Board'.
