In view of the exploitation of domestic workers, domestic work will also have to be brought under the purview of labor laws. In the 1931 census, 27 lakh population of the country was marked as 'domestic workers'. Whereas in the 1971 census, this number decreased to just 67,000. While in 2001, the number of female domestic workers in the country was 1.47 crore, in 2011 this number increased to 2.5 crore.
Domestic Workers Welfare Commission should be formed
An Act should be made for domestic workers and under this a Domestic Workers Welfare Commission should be formed. Efforts are being made by KCC to get them registered as workers with the state labor department, to form their own union, association or organization, to get provisions like minimum wage, social security etc.
