In a decisive move to safeguard the legal and human rights of the unorganised and deprived coal mining contract workers, the West Bengal Pradesh Unorganised Workers and Employees Congress (KKC–WB) submitted a comprehensive 16-point Charter of Demands to the Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) authorities at Sodepur, Asansol.
The charter addressed critical issues such as:
Fair wages and timely payment for contract workers.
Health and safety measures in hazardous mining conditions.
Job security and regularisation of long-serving contract workers.
Social security benefits, including provident fund, gratuity, and medical coverage.
Protection against exploitation and arbitrary termination.
The delegation, led by State Coordinator for the Mining Sector, Advocate Rajeshwar Sharma, along with senior KKC–WB leaders, emphasised that the coal mining industry cannot thrive at the cost of workers’ dignity and rights. They urged the authorities to implement reforms without delay.
In response, the ECL authorities assured the delegation that appropriate and necessary action will be taken to address these demands, marking a significant step forward in the ongoing struggle for justice for coal mining contract workers.
This development has sent a strong message of hope to thousands of miners across the region — that their voices are being heard, their rights are being defended, and their fight for justice is gaining momentum.
